The Area Agency on Aging, Region One is part of a national network of organizations established under the Older Americans Act (OAA) to respond to the needs of older adults. There are more than 650 Area Agencies on Aging throughout the United States.
The Area Agency on Aging, Region One advocates, plans, coordinates, develops, and delivers services and programs for the elderly, as well as their caregivers and families. The Area Agency is also involved in the development and implementation of the county's Area Plan. In this role, the Area Agency is responsible for determining the demographic characteristics of Maricopa County's elderly population, identifying and evaluating their needs, and turning that captured information into a system of service delivery. To meet its objectives, the Area Agency contracts with more than 60 social service providers to deliver services that assist the elderly, helping them to remain in their homes as long as possible. Working to ensure an effective and efficient system of service delivery, the Area Agency assesses and monitors its contractors and services, and provides technical and support assistance as needed.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a fatal neuromuscular disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Typically, ALS claims the lives of those affected within two to five years from onset. There is no known cause or cure. There are approximately 300 residents of Arizona living with the reality of ALS daily. In the United States, every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. Every 90 minutes there is a new diagnosis.
As one of 40 chapters in the United States, the ALS Association Arizona Chapter is dedicated solely to the fight against ALS through patient and family support services, equipment loan, ALS multidisciplinary clinics, public awareness and cutting edge research.

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1983. Its goals are patient support, public education, promotion of research and ultimately the treatment and cure of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. CMT is the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, affecting over 150,000 Americans. It has no cure and is slowly progressive, causing muscle weakness and loss of sensation in the lower legs and feet as well as in the hands.
