Relay services, like CaptionCall, are provided to all qualified users thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA requires that people who are hard of hearing have the option to communicate by telephone just like someone without hearing loss. Captioning is provided by CaptionCall and paid through a fund administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The CaptionCall service uses communication assistants who convert the calling party’s spoken words into captioned text.
How is CaptionCall funded?
The cost of relay services is funded through payments by telephone companies, an expense that is typically passed through to telephone users as a surcharge. The funds go into the Interstate Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) fund, which pays for multiple relay services, including the CaptionCall service, and is supervised by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC compensates CaptionCall for providing the captioning service, so there is literally no cost to receive captioning service from this federal program.
Who can use CaptionCall?
The CaptionCall service is available for individuals who have a medically recognized hearing loss necessitating their use of the service. All CaptionCall calls must include a person with hearing loss.
Will the CaptionCall phone work with my hearing aid?
The CaptionCall phone is hearing aid compatible and works with most hearing aids.
Will I have to change my current phone service provider or plan?
CaptionCall has no impact on your current phone service provider. You can keep your current provider and plan. CaptionCall works with your current phone number.
Does CaptionCall impact the services I've selected from my phone service provider?
No, CaptionCall works seamlessly with the services you've selected from your phone service provider, including Caller ID, voicemail, call waiting and call forwarding.
Can I use CaptionCall for long distance calls?
Yes, your phone service provider's standard long distance charges will apply.
Purchase price includes license to use the CaptionCall phone hardware. The CaptionCall phone remains property of CaptionCall in order to provide ongoing support, service, and upgrades.
