A note from PilatesStick ® creator Charles Blount
As an exercise physiologist and long time personal trainer, the practice of Pilates has long been in my peripheral vision. Like many trainers, the method intrigued me.
Created by Joseph Pilates over ninety years ago to aid in rehabilitation of patients, Pilates builds muscle, and improves posture, flexibility, and balance through a series of stretching and strengthening exercises. Joseph Pilates was one of the first Westerners to write about mind-body exercise. In contrast to traditional training, Pilates does not isolate each muscle in training but rather works the entire body as a whole.
When I first began training in Los Angeles over a decade ago, Pilates seemed to be more of a boutique form of fitness reserved for the wealthy but the practice soon began to spring up everywhere. In a 2005 survey done by Club Industry, the Pilates practice in clubs had grown five hundred percent in the last decade. For the last several years, magazines have been filled with celebrities with enviable bodies extorting the virtues of the practice which only peaked the public's interest more. This meant for the average personal trainer such as myself finding a way to harness this explosion of interest was difficult. Traditional Pilates equipment is not only expensive but space consuming making home use or group classes beyond simple mat exercises impractical for those limited by space and funds.
The Breakthrough
When I began developing the Pilatesstick ®, my focus was solely on expanding the use of resistance tubing and giving me fresh ways to work with my clients. However, I soon saw a remarkable similarity to the Cadillac and Reformer, the two machines used in the Pilates method, and to my surprise, found the device embraced by the Pilates community as a way to enhance their Pilates classes and one on one's. A combination of covered resistance tubing and an engraved, lathed and finished wood dowel with unique, fleece covered, foot attachments to hold the users hands and feet in place, Pilatesstick ® can be used to do approximately ninety-five percent of the exercises done on the Cadillac and Reformer. I've even had some Pilates instructors report that their clients request that the Pilatesstick ® be used on the Cadillac in place of the traditional stick attachment as the hands and feet can be attached to the Pilatesstick ®. While I find this gratifying, the true focus of Pilatesstick ® remains allowing personal trainers and Pilates instructors to practice Pilates with their home clients and providing gyms with a way to expand group Pilates classes and enhancing mat.
For home use, Pilates Stick ® can be shut in a door with the included foam door anchor and affixed to any heavy equipment in gyms. It can also be used on ballet bars, or a row of Pilatesstick ® swiveling wall mounts. This allows maximum use of space as there is no heavy equipment to be moved after use and allows clients to even continue their practice while home or traveling. Pilatesstick ® comes with an exercise mat, foot loops, foam door anchor, Slastix resistance tubing, challenging 12 exercise poster, 20 minute video featuring Ramana Certified Susannah Catrone and the Pilatesstick ® all which rolls into a light bag that the trainer or client can comfortably wear over their shoulder.
For myself in my own training business, I have enjoyed being able to finally integrate Pilates into my client's routines. From 210 pound men to 100 pound women, it is extremely versatile and I can challenge anyone. With the foot loops and the natural wood Pilatesstick ®, it gives the authentic feel of Pilates Equipment.
