What is pulse oximetry?
Pulse oximtrey is a non-invasive method of measuring the oxygenation of a patient's hemoglobin. A Pulse Oximeter, such as the Sequal SmartPulse, is placed across a thin part of the patient's body, such as a finger, and a light containing both red and infrared wavelengths is passed from one side to the other. The change of absorption is measured and used to calculate the level of oxygen in the patient's blood.
Pulse oximetry data is used when a patient's blood oxygenation is unstable, such as in intensive care and emergency departments of hospitals. Patients on oxygen therapy use a Pulse Oximeter like the Sequal Smartpulse to ensure that their treatments are effective while pilots in unpressurized aircraft use them to help prevent the possibility of blackouts. When your Sequal SmartPulse stops working, or is not giving accurate readings, here are a few things to check before calling customer service:
- 1. Batteries - Battery life is dependent on the quality of batteries used. Be sure that your batteries have power and are making good contact in the battery compartment
- 2. Sensor Debris - Dirt, oil, and food particles from your hands can accumulate on the sensor, so make sure that your sensor is clear
- 3. Fingernail Polish/Bandages - Anything on your fingers can inhibit the infrared light from passing through them and getting an accurate reading, especially dark or metallic fingernail polish
- 4. Blood Flow Restriction - It is best not to use the Sequal SmartPulse when using a blood pressure cuff or anything else that restricts bloodflow
