We're not talking about fluffy flapjacks flipping over a griddle or piled high into a short stack with butter and maple syrup. No, in ostomy, pancaking is less delicious and more headache-inducing. Pancaking occurs when your excretions clump up next to your stoma and refuse to fall to the bottom of your bag. This problem increases the frequency you need to clean out your bag and can even cause your wafer to degrade faster than designed. There are many ways in which this problem can be dealt with. Pancaking

Pancaking is a common problem experienced by most ostomates. The reasons for it vary, but it can be common for those with an ileostomy or colostomy. There are several factors that cause pancaking and understanding these can help someone prevent it in the future. Perhaps the most common cause of pancaking is excretion consistency. Excretions are an amalgam of the foods you eat and chemicals produced in the digestive tract and both of these change their ingredients and quantities regularly. The most common causes of pancaking associated with excretion consistency are low fiber intake and low water consumption. As such, including more fiber in your diet and drinking more water are effective at reducing pancaking. If that doesn't work, it could be the result of an anti-ballooning pouch. Ballooning occurs when gases created in the digestive tract fill a pouch, causing it to expand. Some pouches are made with a filter to allow these gases to drain. This, however, sometimes creates a vacuum that can cause pancaking. To prevent this, many ostomates will blow a small amount of air into their pouches before sealing them. This will keep the walls of the pouch separated, preventing pancaking. How to Use

Using a lubricant/deodorizer for an ostomy pouch is simple and effective to help contents collect at the bottom of a pouch. To use, only apply 1-1/2 teaspoons of this product to the inside of a pouch. Squeeze the lubricant inside the pouch to coat the pouch walls as best as possible with a thin layer. If you are using an anti-ballooning pouch with a filter, avoid bringing the lubricant into contact with the filter to prevent hindering the filter's use.
