Dry Heating pads
Dry therapy can be used for muscle strain, minor aches, pains and stiffness. It is called dry therapy because heat is directly applied to a surface area in a dry state. The heat pad maintains a constant level of dry heat as long as it is plugged. The "dry" heat does have an unwanted side effect of drying out the skin. The dry heat can cause dehydration to the affected area. The most common dry heat application is use of electric heating pads.
Moist Heating Pads
Moist heat therapy is different from dry heat therapy because of moist heat therapy adds some type of moisture source along with heat. Who could benefit from using a moist heating pad? A moist heating pad is ideal for people suffering from arthritis, back or muscle aches and stiffness, neck pain, sprains, strains and sports injuries. As you can see a heating pad helps to relieve pain in many different parts of the body. So having a heating pad on hand in case of an emergency is a smart purchase.
Hot and Cold Therapy
Heat or cold therapy works by stimulating your body"s own healing force. For instance, heat dilates the blood vessels, stimulates blood circulation, and reduces muscle spasms. In addition, heat alters the sensation of pain. You can use either dry heat -- such as heating pads or heat lamps -- or moist heat -- such as warm baths or heated wash cloths. Conversely, cold compresses reduce swelling by constricting blood vessels. While cold packs may be uncomfortable at first, they can numb deep pain.
Hot and cold compression therapy for arthritis.
Many arthritis doctors recommend both heat and cold treatments to help reduce inflammation and ease the pain and stiffness that comes with arthritis. It may take a little "trial and error" to learn which therapy works best for your pain. But by staying with it, you may find the right combination of hot packs and ice packs to get the most relief from pain and make it easier to manage arthritis. If pain persists, be sure to talk with your doctor.
