Pill OrganizersA Shoebox is not a Pill Organizer!
According to the AMA higher than 40% of people 65+ years old are prescribed 5 or more medications, and each year about 1/3 of the elderly experience serious adverse effects. These effects are caused by the improper dosage or mixture of prescription medications the side effects can cause bone-breaking falls, disorientation, and inability to urinate, even heart failure.
Obviously over medication of the elderly is a huge concern. Many times the elderly patients are impaired with a cognitive disability. This disability limits their ability keep track of their own medications. More often than not their pills are unorganized. It would not be uncommon for a patient to have several shoeboxes filled with bottles of pills. This is not only disorganized but potentially deadly as well. An elderly person not knowing which pill to take or which pills they have already taken can land them in the hospital.
The National Council on Patient Information and Education says that about 90% of Medicare recipients consume prescription medications and many are non-adherent. In a 2007 survey of 17,000 Medicare beneficiaries, 2/5"s of seniors reported taking 5 or more prescription medications. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, costs associated with this non-adherence range mounting to $1 billion annually in hospital costs. And the FDA calculates that more than two million severe adverse drug reactions occur every year, writing that adverse drug reactions are the 4th leading cause of death, causing 100,000 deaths each year.
