Hypothermia vs. Frostbite

When dealing with especially harsh weather conditions, it"s important to be aware of the severity of the potentially life-threatening health implications involved. Unfortunately, the risks can run deeper than the common cold or flu. When proper precautions are taken however, the more dangerous conditions resulting from too much exposure to extremely cold weather can be avoided.

Hypothermia and frostbite are two such conditions, and left undetected and untreated for any amount of time can result in loss of limb or even death. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they are two different conditions and it is important to understand the distinctions as well as the warning signs of each.

Hypothermiais a condition that sets in when a body loses heat faster than it can produce heat. Normal body temperature is 98.6 F. Hypothermia results when the body temperature drops below 95 F.

This can occur when a person has spent too much time outdoors in bitter cold conditions. One can contract it from being cold and wet or being immersed in cold water for any sustained amount of time. Hypothermia affects the functioning of internal organs and can result in heart and respiratory system failure and death. Infants and the elderly are especially at risk of contracting hypothermia. Signs of Hypothermia usually develop gradually. They include slurred speech, lethargy, loss of coordination, slow breathing and confusion and memory loss.

If you encounter someone showing signs of Hypothermia, call 9-1-1, and monitor their breathing. If breathing slows, administer CPR. Remove all wet clothing, and insulate the person from the cold ground. Do not apply direct heat.

Frostbiteon the other hand, affects exposed, often smaller body parts such as hands, feet, ears, nose, etc., It occurs when skin and the underlying tissue begins to freeze. It is detected when the skin takes on a yellow hue or becomes waxy or numb. Mild forms of frostbite are treatable. More advanced forms however, can result in muscle, bone and nerve damage or infection, requiring amputation.

If you suspect you are experiencing signs of Frostbite, remove any wet clothes, cover any exposed areas of the skin, and gradually warm frostbitten areas. Place hands under armpits, and be careful not to walk on frostbitten feet or toes.
