Sleep Disorder Information

Sleep Disorder Information - Are You Sleepy or Do You Have a Sleep Disorder?

While in college a lack of sleep is worn as a badge of pride, most adults quickly become frustrated with the lack of concentration and energy felt from a few nights' lack of sleep. Sometimes fatigue from lack of sleep is an indicator of another medical issue, or is a medical issue all to itself - a sleep disorder. When fatigue becomes a prominent problem affecting your daily life, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder.

According to polls conducted on behalf of the National Sleep Foundation, 20% of Americans report they get less than 6 hours of sleep, on average, per night. Sleep disorders are more common in adults, but there are sleep disorders in children as well.

The four most common types of sleep disorders are: insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome. Read on to find out if you experience any of these sleep disorders' symptoms.

Insomnia, a circadian rhythm sleep disorder, is the inability to fall asleep. Stress can lead to the inability to fall asleep, but if the problem continues after the stress has been removed and the lack of sleep is disrupting daily life you may suffer from the insomnia sleep disorder. Insomnia shouldn't be confused with sleep deprivation, which simply indicates someone isn't getting enough sleep. Both sleep deprivation and the insomnia sleep disorder can damage the immune system.

With the sleep apnea sleep disorder breathing is interrupted during sleep. Sleep apnea usually occurs because of a problem in the windpipe (either physical or mechanical). The primary sleep disorder symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness. Older age, being overweight, having narrow nasal passages, and/or enlarged tonsils all increase your chances of suffering from the sleep apnea sleep disorder.

Like sleep apnea, the primary symptom of the narcolepsy sleep disorder is excessive sleepiness during the day. However, people with narcolepsy fall asleep uncontrollably throughout the day, and they can be asleep anywhere from seconds to more than 30 minutes. Additional symptoms include being unable to move when you're falling asleep (or waking). The narcolepsy sleep disorder is usually inherited genetically, but can also be associated with brain damage.

If you're concerned about your safety due to excessive sleepiness products like the Doze Alert can help. The Doze Alert is a sleep warning device you wear over your ear, and is activated by the tilt of your head.

Pharmaceutical companies often advertise remedies for the restless leg syndrome sleep disorder. The primary symptom for restless leg syndrome is the irresistible urge to move your legs when you're in bed, when you wake up from sleep, or even throughout the day when fully awake. Depending on how intense the discomfort level is from restless leg syndrome, sometimes just walking around or rubbing the legs is a sleep disorder remedy. Handheld massage tools can help remedy restless leg syndrome, and the Tiger Tail Rolling Muscle Massager is ideal for such a purpose.

Medications are available for sleep disorders, but there are many things you can do naturally and a variety of sleep aid products that allow you to remedy some sleep disorders without taking prescription medications.

To help all sleep disorders in general there are a variety of natural, easy things to do:

Stick to a regular bedtime schedule (go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, regardless of weekday or weekend).

Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bed.

Your bedroom should be dark, quiet, and cool. You can use eye masks and ear plugs to help you sleep. Additionally, you can keep cool with products like the ChiliPad Mattress Topper. If you are in the minority and sleep better when warm, try the Cool-or Heat Sleep Pad for versatility.

Make an effort to relax before bed. There are a variety of deep breathing exercises to do, you can meditate, or listen to soft, relaxing music. The Sleepsonic Mini Speaker Pillow Sleep Kit is a pillow with embedded speakers to help drown out distractions with soothing music. Some people prefer sound machines, such as the Marpac SleepMate 980A Sound Machine & Conditioner seen on The Today Show, instead of music. Seen on both The Today Show and The View, the Marpac Marsona 1288A Sound Machine is the "top of the line," programmable, white noise sound machine.

If you are experiencing sleep disorder symptoms which don't improve after you do the tips above then consider consulting your health care provider about the possibility you may have a sleep disorder.
