Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology is includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices and is used by people with disabilities. Assistive technology can include mobility devices such as scooters and power wheelchairs. Assistive technology devices can also be used for hearing and low vision. This included technological advances in computer hardware, software, and peripherals that assist people with disabilities in accessing computers or other information technologies.
What is the Assistive Technology Act?
A formal, legal definition of assistive technology was first published in the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988. The Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act (P.L. 100-407) was first passed in 1988, reauthorized in 1994 (P.L. 103-218) and again in 1998 (P.L. 105-394). It was designated as a systems change grant and is often called the "Tech Act" for short.[2] Congress passed this legislation to growth access to, granting of, and funding for assistive technology through state efforts and national enterprises. The 1998 law reaffirmed that technology is a valuable tool that can be used to improve independent living for Americans with disabilities.
